Special Project for the Pavilion of Applied Arts part of May You Live In Interesting Times Curated by Ralph Rugoff Venice, Italy
11 May – 24 November 2019 Preview: 8 – 10 May 2019
It’s About Time, uses rich archival materials of La Biennale and the V&A to examine the apparent absence of women from the historical narratives of exhibitions and museums. The project focuses on records of meetings held by the Mayor of Venice, Riccardo Selvatico, beginning in 1893, which led to the creation of La Biennale two years later. It’s About Time brings together Italian women practitioners from London and Venice, speculating a scenario in which the foundations of La Biennale di Venezia were built by women, allowing the sound of their “unheard voices” to be encountered for the first time. Asserting their own presence through invention and self-discovery, the resulting debate resonates within the immersive structure placed inside the Pavilion, drawing attention to the mechanisms of how knowledge is created and disseminated. The installation is a collaboration with architects Studio Abroad and furniture designer Michael Marriott.
